Graduated from Egypt in 1975. Then travelled to the United Kingdom where I started my training in 1977 at The University hospitals of Liverpool & London in Guys & St Thomas Hospitals. Obtained diploma of psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians in 1980. Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London in 1984. Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1996. Also received Diploma in Health care Management from The Royal College of Surgeons In Ireland in April 2000.
I moved to the Kingdom of Bahrain in 1988 till now and joined the Ministry of Health as a Consultant Psychiatrist. Participated actively with collegues in developing mental health services in Bahrain tailored to the British system.
Joined the Arabian Gulf University from 1987 till 2007 as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry.
Joined the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland – Medical University of Bahrain from 2008 as an A. Professor and head of department of psychiatry till date.
Coordinator between Ministry of Health in Bahrain and the Royal College of surgeons in Ireland for organizing and conducting the Diploma of psychological medicine from 1994 till 2000 where Twenty primary health care doctors attended an intensive clinical course and examined by a team of Professors from Dublin & Bahrain for early detection of psychiatric problems in primary care sector in Bahrain.
Chairperson of the organization committee for several conferences of Psychiatry in Bahrain in association with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK in 1991, the World Psychiatric Association 1996, Pan Arab congress in psychiatry in 2000 and the Arabian Gulf Psychiatric Association as a subdivision of the World Psychiatric Association.
Joined the advisory committee of the Mental health in Bahrain from 1990 till 2005 as vice president. Also the psychiatric section of Bahrain Medical Society. Developed the Bahrain Association for friends of psychiatric patients.
I am Honorary member of the British Medical Association,The American Psychiatric Association, Bahrain Medical Society and vice president of the Arab Gulf Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Azhar Abu-Ali is currently a senior licensed clinical psychologist at Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital and holds the positions of Consultation/Liaison Lead and Psychology/Psychotherapy Fellowship Training Lead, and Deputy Chair of the Dubai Health Child Protection Committee . She is the Scientific Chair of the Emirates Child and Adolescent Mental Health Society (ESCAM) Board and the Chairperson of the Infant Mental Health Committee under ESCAM, in addition to a member the Arabian Child and Adolescent Mental Health Association. Dr. Abu-Ali specializes in working with children, adolescents, and families. Her other specializations include working with trauma survivors such as domestic violence, child abuse, war, medical trauma, grief and loss, and complex trauma. Additionally, Dr. Abu Ali provides specialized psychotherapy modalities including play, sand, and art therapy. Recent interests and emerging area of specialization include infant mental health and trauma.
Dr. Abu-Ali has previously served as the Director of Care and Rehabilitation in the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, worked as a Research Consultant with the World Bank, and served in other capacities including Director of the school-based mental health program for immigrants and refugees at the Center for Multicultural Human Services in the United States. Dr. Abu-Ali has received her academic and clinical training in California and Virginia.
Dr. Abu-Ali published comprehensive regional research and theoretical projects focusing on adolescent identity development, child survivors of trauma, treatment efficacy, and multicultural competency. Her most recent research study was a grant-funded study by Al Jalila Foundation on caregiving and chronic pediatric illness in the United Arab Emirates. She further specializes in developing and conducting regional professional training workshops in the fields of infant and child mental health, and pediatric health care.

Dr. Salwa Salem Khalaf AlHosani is the first UAE national consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi, serving since 2006. She is currently the Acting Medical Director of Sakina Abu Dhabi Region and the Head of the SKMC Child Protection Committee. Dr. AlHosani has also served as the Division Head of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at SKMC from 2018 to 2023 and co-chairs the SKMC Medical Board Committee.
Dr. AlHosani earned her B.Sc in basic medical sciences and M.D. from Arabian Gulf University, Bahrain, and holds multiple certifications, including the Arab Board in general adult psychiatry and licensed certifications in autism diagnostics. She has completed a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry accredited by the Saudi Board.

Dr. Samia is a Consultant Psychiatrist and a Head of Psychiatry Department, Rashid Hospital, Dubai Health – Dubai Academic Health Corporation (DAHC).Dr. Samia is the President of Emirates Society of Mental Health (ESMH), also the President of Arab Federation of Psychiatrists (AFP), and the Secretary of Education and Training in Asian Federation of Psychiatric Associations (AFPA).Dr. Samia is the Chair of Wellbeing Committee; in Post Graduate Medical Education, Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dubai Health, and the Head of Scientific Program in the Psychiatry Department – Rashid Hospital in Dubai Health.She plays a great important role on the awareness of mental health in United Arab Emirates, and she is the Head of Mental Health Awareness Campaign – Dubai Health.She also the core organizing of many Regional and International conferences/congress.Dr. Samia has Several Publications in peer reviewed International Journals.She is an author of two Books on Self Harm in Substance Abuse Population and Professionals' Perceptions of Sexual Abuse.Dr. Samia has a special interest in Forensic Psychiatry; the interaction of mental health with the law and the complexity of pathways to offending.
